Upcycling Furniture – Fashion Statement or a Way of Saving Money?
At Borthwick Decorators we often hear that furniture, typically kitchen units, looks dated and tired, especially when the walls and ceilings are decorated. We also hear the phrases “shabby chic”, “French style”, “farmhouse style” and “antique make-over” all the time. We don’t profess to be interior designers but we will happily discuss and professionally advise on what can and cannot be achieved. This will include providing options that both look appealing and add a focal point to a room. We will also advise on a product that is durable and practical for the environment it is used in. This means considering moisture, wear, tear and heat resistance requirements.
Professional high quality paint is our first consideration; we will make sure it provides a durable, practical and aesthetically pleasing finish. The second consideration is the techniques and application; this comes down to experience and understanding the existing materials. The third consideration and probably the most important is the preparation. It is important that the surfaces are properly prepared to ensure that the final finish looks good.
So where do we start? The project commences with us assessing the area and agreeing with the client what needs to be done and obviously agreeing the final colour of the hand painted kitchen or furniture.
As professional painters and decorators we will do the following before starting work;
A. Mask areas to protect walls, skirting, flooring and all other areas not included in the project.
B. Ensure surfaces are free from dirt and contamination.
C. Remove cupboard doors and drawer fronts to paint, if it’s not practical to paint them whilst still in place.
D. Prepare the surfaces, before applying a primer or undercoat.
E. Once the surface is prepared a high adhesion primer will be applied to all the surfaces to support the final paint application.
F. Prepare primer coat for second application. This includes sanding filling and cleaning the surfaces again.
G. Apply first coat of the agreed colour and finish to the surfaces allowing sufficient drying time.
H. Apply the final coat of the agreed colour and finish, again allowing sufficient drying time. The paint used will be either oil or water based and will be applied to enhance the natural grain and look of the wood.
I. Re instate any frontals removed during the project.
J. Agree with the client the work has been completed to the requested standard.
K. Tidy up all material and clean the environment before leaving. Throughout the work our attention to detail is first and foremost, from the initial client meeting to the completion of the project.
With Borthwick Decorators it starts with a free, no obligation consultation via a face to face meeting, emails or by telephone. We will discuss every aspect of the job and obviously get the information we need to produce a quote for the work.
